A bit about wood
There are two basic types of wood, softwood and hardwood otherwise known as conifer and deciduous.
In winter the Deciduous drop their leaves, whereas softwoods- with the exception of the larch - keeps its needles.
Hardwoods take much longer to grow, approximately 100 years and more for oak, whereas softwoods can be harvested from around 50 years upwards. Ash provides the exception to the rule, growing very fast and being ready for burning almost immediately after felling.
The calorific values of softwoods & hardwoods are the same; the difference is in the density of different woods:
- Hardwoods generally weigh more than softwoods, therefore 'contain' more heat per volume than softwoods.
- Larch and Douglas Fir are among the heaviest (densest) of the softwoods, and therefore give out as much heat as some of the lighter hardwood species.
- Both Larch and Douglas Fir are prized in many countries as top notch firewood.
We aim to sell all our firewood at 20% or less moisture content (ie. fully dried) which is in line with stove manufacturer guidelines.
What type of wood can we sell to you?
We supply mainly softwoods, Douglas Fir – the 'crème de la crème' of burning and construction timber and also Larch logs. (See above for pricing and availability)
Which type of wood is best for burning?
Many people will only use hardwoods for burning - we prefer certain types of pine such as Douglas Fir which is the tallest tree in the world, and burns without spitting provided it is properly dried.
Constant Cover Forestry
Constant Cover Forestry is a system whereby we never carry out large felling programs, but encourages crops to self-seed.
When we fell trees in Allensdown, we ensure we are using the whole tree. The bottom large logs go for construction and carpentry timber, and as the tree tapers further up, this less valuable part goes for fencing material, posts, stakes and logs for burning.
The idea is to waste nothing!
We have a ‘Demo 80kw’ boiler with 4000ltr water storage tank, which runs fine on softwoods, provided they are dried to 15-20% moisture.
The drying procedure
Once the wood has been cut down to size it is placed into dumpy bags and taken to the drying barn* where it is then stacked and left to dry.
The first dried wood is then moved to another barn ready for use.
Why a drying barn?
A drying barn saves electricity, so is more ecologically friendly… saving both the humans and wildlife’s world. Our processing machinery is located in the middle of a wood where there is no electricity supply.![]()
Softwoods also dry more quickly than hardwoods. When such fuels are more readily available, it seems a shame to burn the more precious long growing hardwoods.
The benefits of sustainable
naturally dried wood
You will be helping to save the environment and boost our natural well being, by using trees as an organic fuel. But only if you follow a sustainable cycle of planting and growth, compensating for burning by growing.
This is crucial… Woods and forests are only sustainable if a comparable amount of timber is planted and grown as is burned.
Just a little bit more…
We intend to be producing barn-dry logs by the beginning of the winter. We are already receiving orders for logs from people and companies who appreciate not only the excellence of our product but that we derive it from a sustainable source.
We are listed on the Stovesonline firewood supplier list.
